Paronychia is an infection of the paronychium, which is the soft tissue that borders the nail. This infection is caused by fungus or bacteria, and it can be acute or chronic.
Acute paronychia lasts less than 6 weeks and it’s usually caused by bacteria. It tends to develop after bacteria is introduced to your toe following some type of trauma, which can be caused by trauma, tight shoes, tight socks, pedicures, or cutting your nails too short. Acute paronychia can also develop as the result of a hangnail or ingrown toenail.
You may have symptoms of acute paronychia include pain, swelling, redness, discolouration or thickening of the nail, and in some cases, blisters filled with pus or pus draining from the injury. Your infected toe must be treated otherwise the infection can spread up your toe and worse case can spread up your leg. In some cases, pain can come from an irritated nerve (mortons neuroma), in which case the nail will not appear red but may be very painful.

Now, a brother and sister contacted our Whistleblower Hotline with a warning over what they say happened to their feet after visiting a local salon.
The North Dakota State Board of Cosmetology confirms it received a phone call from someone wishing to file a complaint about herself and her brother.
Ways To Avoid Pedicure Infections
"The appearance, everyone that I've shown my feet to, ” Nettum said, “everyone says it looks like a third grader polished my toes."
Nettum says once the nails were painted, she realized she didn’t like the nail color. But she says the nail job itself was just plain bad.
"I noticed when I was getting the pedicure, something was hurting in my toe when they were clipping, ” she said, “but I didn't think anything of it, I thought everything was okay.

CK Nails declined an interview with us, but a technician there says the salon uses all the proper disinfectants, and has never had this complaint before.
Mum In Agony After Botched £35 Pedicure At Salon Leaves Her Toe Infected
Andrea Trimble from the North Dakota State Board of Cosmetology says she gets her nails done at that salon. She says she inspected it when she heard about our story. Trimble confirms the salon uses proper disinfectants, and it passed her impromptu inspection.
The North Dakota State Board of Cosmetology tells us CK Nails was last inspected in February of 2017. The business passed, though there were a few violations. The board confirms it received a phone call yesterday from two individuals wishing to file a complaint about the salon. But other than that, we're told the board has no other complaints against the salon.
As for Jade Nettum: she paid $100 for the services and asked for her money back. She says she was told to cancel the payment on her credit card.
What Is Toenail Fungus?
"By Monday morning I was going to call, ” Nettum said, “the money was already taken out and I did find out that in order to get the money put back in my account, I'd have to pay $35."
The technician we spoke with at CK Nails says he was there when the siblings got their nails done. He tells us both seemed very happy with the job done at the time. He says he would have refunded Nettum's money if she had trouble getting it back herself on her credit card. But Nettum tells us he did not offer that at the time.
